Learning lifesaving skills
Every year, we’re typically called to around 500 cardiac arrests across our region. This Restart a Heart Day, we want to turn that number into something positive.
We’re looking for at least 500 primary school pupils to join our special Helicopter Hero live lessons from 10am on Friday 16 October, hosted in partnership with the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).
By joining the live lesson, your school will have completed the first step in our Helicopter Hero badge. There are three steps to the badge:
1. Learn a lifesaving skill – the live lesson covers this by demonstrating CPR.
2. Raise awareness of North West Air Ambulance Charity – we’ll provide ready-made resources and ideas to help pupils share what they’ve learned.
3. Fundraise – we’ll also give you simple, flexible fundraising ideas that schools can choose from.
If you complete all three steps every pupil will earn their very own Helicopter Hero Badge and certificate.
Help us create 500 new heroes this Restart a Heart Day, register today.

How to get involved
Register your primary school today and join our Restart a Heart live lessons. Together with NWAS and our Critical Care Paramedic, Deborah, pupils will learn about CPR, discover what happens when our crews respond to an emergency and understand how they can help.
There will be two free 40 minute lessons designed for primary age pupils. Teachers can sign up individual classes or year groups, but we recommend one sign up per year group.
The first lesson will be for years 3 and 4, starting at 10am.
The second will be for years 5 and 6, starting at 11am.
You must register your school to receive the link to join the live lesson, you’ll also receive some helpful resources.
What you could win:
An unforgettable NWAA experience
Schools registered for our Restart a Heart live lesson will be entered into a draw to win an exclusive NWAA base visit for a class of up to 30 pupils*.
The winning school could have the opportunity to:
- Visit an NWAA base
- Meet members of the NWAA team
- Discover more about our crew, helicopters, and equipment
- Celebrate becoming Helicopter Heroes
*Subject to final approval, T&Cs, safeguarding, and operational requirements.
A purpose made defibrillator cabinet
The winning school will also receive a defibrillator cabinet from the North West Ambulance Service who are encouraging schools to make their defibrillators publicly accessible. With this purpose made defibrillator cabinet, the schools defib can be moved from inside the school building to outside. The heated and lit defib cabinet means that a defibrillator can be made available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week meaning if someone suffers a cardiac arrest, access to a defibrillator can be more easily accessible, as opposed to one that would have restricted access and be unavailable when the school is closed.
